Het verhaal speelt zich af in 1590, als de Nederlandse kunstenaar Hendrick Goltzius naar het kasteel aan de Rijn komt van de markgraaf van de Elzas. Goltzius haalt de graaf over om hem geld te geven zodat hij een drukpers aan kan schaffen. Goltzius wil hiermee erotische versies van geïllustreerde verhalen uit het Oude Testament afdrukken, zoals de verhalen van Adam en Eva, van Lot en zijn dochters, David en Bathsheba, Potiphar's vrouw, Samson en Delilah, en het verhaal van Johannes de Doper en Salome uit het Nieuwe Testament. Nadat hij zijn boek heeft voltooid, biedt hij de graaf aan om de illustraties aan zijn hof op te voeren als een toneelstuk.
